How to best monetize a free country codes web tool?
Hey everyone, I recently launched a free web tool called 'Country Codes Directory: International Phone, Calling, Dialing & ISO Codes'. It's a pretty straightforward web utility, providing all sorts of country-related codes, and I'm happy to say it's starting to pick up some decent organic traffic.
The challenge now is figuring out the best way to monetize it without ruining the user experience. It's a pure utility tool, so I'm a bit stumped on how to generate sustainable revenue while keeping it valuable and free for most users.
So, I'm looking for some advice from this awesome community:
- What are the most successful monetization models you've seen for free, data-heavy web tools like mine?
- Should I just stick with display ads (e.g., AdSense, direct deals) or try to explore other avenues?
- I've also been thinking about a premium API for commercial users or offering some advanced features behind a paywall โ is that a viable option here?
- Ultimately, how do you balance providing free value with generating enough revenue to keep things going?

Absolutely, for a data utility like your Country Codes Directory: International Phone, Calling, Dialing & ISO Codes, focusing on a premium API monetization model or a freemium structure for advanced features is generally more sustainable and offers better revenue potential than relying solely on display ads. Consider a tiered access for your API, similar to what services like AbstractAPI or ipstack offer, alongside a basic ad-supported version for casual users.
