Dealing with 'sitemap file size too large' in Search Console, affects sitemap validation?
hey everyone, following up on the 'too many URLs' discussion last week. we're running into another related headache now, and it's really messing with our sitemap validation process.
we've implemented a dynamic sitemap index, which seemed like the right move to deal with the sheer volume of URLs, breaking them down into smaller, more manageable sitemaps. that part is working, but it feels like we just shifted the problem around a bit.
the new problem is, even with the sitemap index pointing to these smaller files, google search console is now reporting 'sitemap file size too large' or 'too many URLs' *within* individual sitemap files referenced by the index. this happens especially for categories on our site that just have a massive number of items, like product listings or blog archives. it's constantly affecting our sitemap validation status and making it hard to trust if google is actually seeing all our new content.
we've tried a few things, like further splitting these problematic individual sitemaps into even smaller ones based on sub-categories or date ranges. we're also making sure we're using proper gzip compression on all files, which helps, but doesn't completely solve it. it feels like we're constantly playing whack-a-mole with these limits, and the manual effort of constantly monitoring and adjusting these dynamic sitemaps is becoming a full-time job.
how do you guys effectively manage dynamic sitemaps for sites with millions of constantly changing URLs without constantly hitting these size or URL count ceilings, especially when trying to maintain good sitemap validation? are there any advanced strategies or tools for extremely large dynamic sites to ensure all URLs are discoverable and sitemap validation is smooth, beyond just creating more and more sitemap files? i'm really looking for something more sustainable than just splitting files endlessly.
anyone faced this before and found a solid, scalable solution?

Hope this helps your conversions!
